Peter Jackson sparks debate with AI comments at Cannes Film Festival
Peter Jackson says AI in film is “just a special effect” while defending Andy Serkis’ Gollum performance

Peter Jackson says he doesn’t “dislike” AI in film but worries it may hurt recognition for motion-capture roles like Andy Serkis’ Gollum.
Speaking during a masterclass at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival after receiving an Honorary Palme d’Or, the Oscar-winning filmmaker described AI as another filmmaking tool rather than something entirely new. Jackson said he sees AI as comparable to traditional visual effects but stressed that protecting actors’ likeness rights remains essential in Hollywood.

The director explained that he has no issue with filmmakers using AI-generated versions of actors if permission and licensing agreements are properly secured. However, he warned against the unauthorised use of performers’ likenesses, calling that the real danger surrounding AI technology in entertainment.
Jackson also argued that the ongoing AI debate may hurt actors working in motion-capture roles. Referencing Serkis’ acclaimed performance as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jackson said generated or digital characters now face even greater challenges when it comes to awards recognition.
According to Jackson, Serkis delivered a “human-generated performance” rather than an AI-created one, but modern industry discussions around AI may prevent performances like Gollum from being properly acknowledged during awards season.
The filmmaker also addressed the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum movie, confirming that Serkis will direct and star in the project. Jackson explained that Serkis understands the character’s psychology and emotional complexity better than anyone else, which made him the ideal choice to lead the film.
Jackson received the honorary award at Cannes from longtime collaborator and Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood.
