KARACHI:

Just a short drive from the bustle of the metropolis, the rugged coastal stretches of Gadani and Sonmiani are quietly transforming into some of Pakistan's most captivating tourist destinations, where turquoise waters, thunderous waves and dramatic mountain backdrops offer a rare fusion of raw natural beauty and modern leisure.

The coastal area of Gadani and Sonmiani, located at the confluence of Sindh and Balochistan, are rapidly gaining popularity as major tourist destinations, offering a blend of natural beauty and modern recreational facilities.

Situated around 50 kilometres from Karachi - roughly a one to one-and-a-half-hour drive - these coastal areas feature deep blue waters, roaring waves and striking mountain backdrops in shades of red and yellow, creating a captivating sight for visitors.

Officials said recent development work at these sites is part of the Green Tourism Pakistan initiative, which aims to promote the country's cultural, historical and religious heritage alongside its unexplored natural landscapes.

Under the project, Gadani has been developed into an oasis-like tourist spot, with a newly built resort providing facilities of international standards. Adding to the uniqueness of the location, the Gadani ship-breaking yard - where large decommissioned vessels are lined up - is visible from the coastline.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Green Pak Lagoon Hub South Manager Muhammad Umar said the Gadani and Sonmiani developments fall under the Green Pakistan Initiative, which seeks to introduce Pakistan's coastal beauty and untapped destinations to the global tourism market.

He said the initiative is focused on promoting sustainable tourism while highlighting heritage sites that have remained largely overlooked, with the broader aim of positioning Pakistan as a competitive international tourist destination.

According to officials managing the Gadani site, visitors arriving for day trips and overnight stays have shown keen interest, particularly in the scenic sunset views, which are considered a major attraction.

Meanwhile, Sonmiani beach is also drawing increasing tourist attention due to its distinctive features, including multi-coloured natural rocks scattered along the shoreline, carved yellow hills with stairways leading down to the sea, and electric desert safari rides offering a unique experience.

The presence of rock formations in deep waters and clear blue sea further enhances the appeal of Sonmiani, making it comparable to Gadani in terms of scenic beauty.

Officials said the Green Tourism initiative also seeks to promote Pakistan's Indus Valley civilisation, Gandhara heritage, Sikh and Mughal-era sites, as well as religious tourism, wildlife and natural landscapes.

They added that efforts are under way to project Pakistan as a key destination for adventure, nature-based and experiential tourism, while bringing the unexplored coastal beauty of Sindh and Balochistan to the forefront of the global tourism map.
