KARACHI:

The city's water crisis shows no sign of easing, with large swathes of Karachi enduring up to nine days without supply following an electricity breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station.

The disruption, triggered on April 27, crippled the city's already strained water distribution system after three major transmission lines ruptured. While repairs on two lines have been completed, work on the critical Line No 2 remains unfinished, prolonging shortages across multiple neighbourhoods.

Areas including Korangi, Landhi, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, PIB Colony, Old City Area, Mahmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, Korangi Crossing, DHA, and Clifton continue to face severe supply interruptions. Residents report going without water since as early as April 25, forcing many to purchase expensive tanker water to meet basic needs.

Despite the widespread distress, authorities have come under criticism for their perceived inaction. Citizens say neither the Sindh government nor senior officials of the Water Corporation have taken meaningful notice of the crisis, intensifying public frustration.

Sources further allege that while pipeline supply remains disrupted, government-run hydrants have continued operating without interruption - fueling anger among residents who see it as inequitable distribution.

However, the Water Corporation maintains that the situation is improving. A spokesperson stated that Karachi is currently receiving 610 million gallons per day against a demand of 650 million gallons, leaving a shortfall of 40 million gallons. Officials also confirmed that repairs to the PRCC line have been successfully completed, enabling gradual restoration of supply to affected areas, including Korangi, Malir, Chanesar, Saddar, Clifton, and DHA.
