Jaafar Jackson opened up about what he believes is the biggest misconception surrounding Michael Jackson while attending the Los Angeles premiere of the upcoming biopic Michael.

Jaafar, who portrays his late uncle in the highly anticipated film, walked the red carpet ahead of the movie’s nationwide release and spoke to reporters about stepping into one of music’s most iconic roles.

When asked what misconception about Michael Jackson stands out most, Jaafar said many people wrongly believed the pop superstar “wanted to be white.”

He explained that the film addresses Michael Jackson’s battle with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes loss of pigmentation, and said many people never fully understood how it affected the singer throughout his life.

Jaafar added that Michael dealt with the condition from an early age, suggesting the biopic aims to give audiences greater context about one of the most discussed parts of his appearance.

The authorized Lionsgate film Michael is set to hit theaters on April 24 and has already generated early buzz from select screenings.

Jaafar’s performance has drawn praise from some early viewers, many of whom say the singer’s nephew closely captures Michael Jackson’s voice, look, and mannerisms on screen.

With release day approaching, Jaafar’s comments have reignited conversation about the late star’s legacy and the public narratives that followed him for decades.
