Anna Kendrick has been tapped to direct Netflix’s adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, the bestselling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, marking her second feature film as a director.

According to a report from Deadline, Kendrick will reunite with Netflix following the success of her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour. The adaptation is one of the streaming platform’s most anticipated literary projects since acquiring the rights to the novel in 2022.

Based on Reid’s internationally bestselling book, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo follows a young journalist who is granted an exclusive interview with Evelyn Hugo, an ageing Hollywood icon known for her glamorous career and seven marriages. As Evelyn recounts her life story, she reveals long-hidden secrets, personal sacrifices and the truth behind some of Hollywood’s biggest scandals.

The screenplay was initially written by Liz Tigelaar, with revisions currently being handled by Francesca Sloane. Reid will serve as an executive producer on the project alongside producers from 3Dot Productions and Circle Management + Productions.

The novel has become a publishing phenomenon, selling millions of copies worldwide and gaining a particularly strong following on social media platforms such as TikTok. It remains one of Reid’s most successful works and has consistently appeared on bestseller lists since its release.

Kendrick has continued acting while exploring opportunities behind the camera. Her directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, received positive reviews following its release and helped establish her as a filmmaker in addition to her acting career.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date or casting details for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but Kendrick’s appointment is expected to increase anticipation for the long-awaited adaptation.
