A live-action television series based on The Phantom is officially in development, with filmmaker Reginald Hudlin attached to direct and produce.

The project is being developed by King Features, a subsidiary of Hearst.

Originally created by Lee Falk, The Phantom debuted nearly 90 years ago and is widely regarded as one of the earliest superheroes in comic book history. Known as “The Ghost Who Walks,” the character predates iconic figures like Batman and Iron Man, helping to establish the concept of masked, costumed heroes.

The upcoming series aims to reintroduce the legendary character to modern audiences, building on the franchise’s long-standing global popularity. According to King Features, The Phantom reaches more than 29 million readers worldwide, with strong followings across Europe, Australia, India, and South America. Recent expansions of the brand include digital releases such as Phantom 2040, which offers a contemporary take on the original mythology.

Hudlin brings notable comic book experience to the project, having previously written for Black Panther and co-owning Milestone Media. His involvement signals a commitment to honoring the source material while adapting it for today’s television landscape.

The series remains in early development, with no release date or casting details announced. In addition to the TV adaptation, King Features has hinted at further expansion of The Phantom universe, including a new comic book run and a planned immersive entertainment experience.

The project reflects the ongoing demand for comic book adaptations, as studios continue to revisit classic properties for global audiences.
