The future of the Avatar series is under discussion as The Walt Disney Company evaluates its next steps following the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Director James Cameron addressed the status of the franchise at the Saturn Awards, stating, “To be perfectly clear, we haven’t even made a decision if we’re going forward right now. But should I do that – I’d say that’s likely but not 100% – but we will learn from lessons from all three films.”

Although the latest instalment generated approximately $1.4 billion globally, discussions are reportedly ongoing about reducing the scale of future films.

Tentative release dates for two additional sequels remain set for December 2029 and 2031, though these plans have not been finalised.

The Avatar series has previously delivered strong box office results. The original 2009 film remains the highest-grossing release globally, while Avatar: The Way of Water is among the top earners.

However, comparisons with other recent releases, including Zootopia 2, which surpassed $1.8 billion, have shaped current discussions.

Industry analysis has focused on performance relative to expectations. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore stated, “When an $89 million domestic opening weekend and almost $1.5 billion worldwide would be seen — in any stretch — as a disappointment. That’s why there’s that perception. These are high-class problems to have.”

Within the company, broader franchise strategies are also being reviewed, with Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar projects undergoing similar assessments. Reports suggest that the planned expansion of Avatar-themed attractions at Disney California Adventure may also be reconsidered.

Despite these discussions, production groundwork for future films has progressed, with scripts completed and partial filming already undertaken.

Producer Rae Sanchini said, “Right now we’re figuring out the schedule. We’re working hard on it right now, budgeting, scheduling, planning, and building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.”
