Nintendo has launched a new crossover event in Tetris 99 to mark the Super Mario Galaxy series, with players able to unlock a themed reward during a limited-time competition.

The event, first announced during Mario Day celebrations, began on April 3 2026 and will run until April 7. It forms part of the Maximus Cup and Grand Prix format within the Nintendo Switch Online battle royale title.

Players who take part in the event can earn points through gameplay, with a requirement of more than 100 points needed to unlock a special Super Mario Galaxy-themed design.

The reward includes visual elements inspired by the Galaxy series, offering a customised appearance for use within Tetris 99.

Nintendo has also introduced a collection of Switch user icons based on the Super Mario Galaxy titles. These icons are being released in five waves, providing additional content linked to the event.

Participation in the crossover requires an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The event follows the release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Switch platform in October, with both titles receiving enhancements for newer hardware.

The timing of the crossover aligns with broader Super Mario-related activities, including anniversary celebrations marking 40 years of the franchise.

Players have until early next week to participate in the event and unlock the themed content before it is removed from active rotation.
