Ryan Coogler, fresh off his Oscar wins for Sinners, is already steering his next project with Hulu’s reboot of The X-Files. The series has made a major stride this week with the casting of Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler as two new FBI agents. Importantly, the pair are not replacing the iconic Fox Mulder and Dana Scully but will introduce completely original characters to the long-shuttered division investigating unexplained phenomena.

Deadwyler and Patel are set to bring a fresh dynamic reminiscent of Mulder and Scully, with the show’s description hinting at the classic skeptic-believer tension. Patel, known for roles in Yesterday and The Franchise, and Deadwyler, acclaimed for Till and Station Eleven, are expected to anchor the reboot with compelling performances.

Gillian Anderson, who originally played Scully, has hinted she could return in some capacity. At Awesome Con, she praised Coogler’s vision and script, describing it as “really good” and encouraging fans to give the reboot a chance. David Duchovny’s involvement remains uncertain, though the focus will clearly shift to Deadwyler and Patel’s characters.

Jennifer Yale, known for The Copenhagen Test, has been named showrunner, while series creator Chris Carter will serve as a producer in a non-writing capacity. Coogler has confirmed the series will follow the original’s format, blending monster-of-the-week episodes with mythology arcs exploring extraterrestrial conspiracies and government secrets, continuing the legacy established across the original 11 seasons and The X-Files: Fight the Future.

Although Hulu has not yet announced a pilot date, anticipation is building for a series that promises to respect longtime fans while introducing new viewers to the eerie, suspenseful world of The X-Files. Deadwyler and Patel’s casting signals a bold, fresh direction for the beloved franchise, combining Ryan Coogler’s cinematic sensibilities with the show’s classic mysteries.
