Brandon Sanderson says Mistborn screenplay is 72% complete as multiple screen adaptations progress

Brandon Sanderson has provided a new update on the development of his planned screen adaptations, revealing progress on the screenplay for the upcoming Mistborn film while a separate television adaptation of Skyward continues to move forward.

Speaking during a weekly project update published on May 31 2026, Sanderson said the screenplay for the Mistborn feature film is now 72% complete.

The adaptation forms part of a January 2026 agreement with Apple TV to develop film and television projects based on Sanderson’s Cosmere universe.

According to Sanderson, recent work has focused on refining the opening section of the screenplay rather than advancing through new pages.

“That’s only one percentage point up [from the previous update] because I’ve been doing a lot of revisions on Act 1. I just want to get that into shape. There’s some things I’m wanting to do, you know, some tweaks and some edits. That’s what I’ve been spending my time on this week,” he said.

The author also outlined his next major project once the Mistborn screenplay is completed. Sanderson confirmed he plans to begin work on a pilot episode for The Stormlight Archive and continue developing the wider television series.

“I have to do an entire season of Stormlight. Once I finish the Mistborn screenplay, my next project will be getting a pilot for Stormlight and then trying to get the whole season worked through,” he said.

Sanderson added that he intends to work alongside writing partners during the process while remaining heavily involved in the scripts.

“If you’re like, ‘Brandon, how long will that take?’ Well, I am going to have some writing partners. But I’m going to write a big, decent chunk of it myself, because I would like to,” he said.

Meanwhile, production company Tomorrow Studios is developing Sanderson’s young adult science-fiction series Skyward as a television project. The adaptation is being written by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, although no streaming platform has been announced.

The Skyward franchise currently includes four novels, with the next instalment, Blightfall, scheduled for release later in 2026. Official release dates for the Mistborn film, The Stormlight Archive series and Skyward adaptation have not yet been announced.
