Sheer Khurma remains Eid's centrepiece

Traditional dessert reflects hospitality and cultural heritage

As families across Islamabad celebrate Eidul Fitr with customary zeal and devotion, one traditional delicacy continues to reign as the undisputed centrepiece of festive dining—Sheer Khurma.

From the morning of the first day of Eid through to the final celebrations, this rich and aromatic dessert remains a staple in households, symbolising warmth, hospitality, and enduring cultural heritage. Prepared with fine vermicelli, milk, dates, sugar, and an assortment of dry fruits, Sheer Khurma is far more than a culinary indulgence; it represents a cherished tradition passed down through generations.

On Eid morning, families customarily prepare large quantities of the dessert to cater to a steady flow of visiting relatives and friends. In the days that follow, it continues to feature prominently, with many households either preparing fresh batches or enhancing existing servings with additional garnishes.

Raheela, a university student residing in Sector G-7, remarked that Sheer Khurma is typically the first item served to guests arriving to exchange Eid greetings, making it synonymous with the spirit of generosity and togetherness.

"I cannot imagine Eid without Sheer Khurma," she said, adding that her mother prepares it for family and friends alike. "It is not merely food—it is an integral part of our identity and childhood memories."

Similarly, Ateeqa, a resident of Sector G-10, observed that the dessert holds deep-rooted cultural importance, noting that Eid feels incomplete without beginning the day with Sheer Khurma.

"Families come together to share this traditional dish, which is also served to guests as a gesture of hospitality," she said.

In the lead-up to Eid, markets across the capital witness a marked increase in demand for key ingredients such as dates, dry fruits, and vermicelli. Vendors report that despite rising prices, consumer demand remains robust, underscoring the dish's cultural and emotional significance.

Food experts note that while contemporary desserts and fusion cuisine have gained popularity in recent years, Sheer Khurma continues to dominate Eid menus owing to its deep-rooted traditional value.

Some households have introduced minor variations—such as the addition of condensed milk or a broader selection of nuts—yet the essence of the dish remains unchanged.
