Quentin Tarantino is stepping into the world of theatre with his first-ever stage play, The Popinjay Cavalier, which is set to debut in London’s West End in early 2027.

The project will mark a new creative chapter for the filmmaker, who will both write and direct the production. The play is being developed by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment, though the specific theatre venue, casting and full creative team have not yet been announced.

Described as a “swashbuckling comedy,” The Popinjay Cavalier is set in 1830s Europe and centers on deception, disguises and romantic adventure in the style of classic stage and screen epics.

The stage production represents Tarantino’s first major theatrical work after decades of success in film. The director, known for movies like Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has long spoken about exploring other storytelling formats as he nears the end of his filmmaking career.

Development on the play is expected to continue through 2026 before it officially opens in the West End the following year. If successful, Tarantino has suggested the production could potentially expand beyond London with a touring version.

The project arrives during a transitional period for the filmmaker, who has previously said he plans to retire from directing after completing his tenth film, making the stage venture an intriguing next step in his evolving career.
