Harry Styles has spoken publicly about the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne for the first time, more than a year after the tragic incident.

In a wide-ranging interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, Styles opened up about grief, public perception, and how Payne's passing prompted him to reevaluate his life. Payne died on October 7, 2024, at age 31, after falling from a third-floor balcony of a hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Styles admitted that discussing Payne publicly has been difficult, particularly navigating the public's expectations around grief.

"I struggle with that a little bit even," Styles told Lowe. "I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with kind of acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of own part of your grief in a way."

The Grammy-winning artist reflected on the unique pain of losing someone who shared a similar life experience.

"It's so difficult to lose a friend," he said. "It's difficult to lose any friend, but it's so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways. It's like, I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great."

Styles shared that Payne's death became a turning point for him personally. "It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, 'OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?'"

Following Payne's death, Styles and his former bandmates—Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson—issued joint and individual statements. Styles wrote at the time, "I will miss him always, my lovely friend." The four reunited to pay tribute to Payne at his funeral.

One Direction was formed on The X Factor in 2010 and became a global phenomenon before going on indefinite hiatus in 2016. Each member pursued successful solo careers.

Styles told Lowe he believes "the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest." He appears to be doing just that: his fourth album, Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally, drops Friday, followed by a Netflix concert special this weekend.
