Netflix honors Eric Dane with final 'Famous Last Words; interview following his ALS battle and death at 53

Netflix has released a deeply personal documentary special honoring Eric Dane following his death on February 19, 2026, after a battle with ALS.
Titled Famous Last Words: Eric Dane, the 50-minute film features the actor’s final long-form interview, recorded in 2025 after his diagnosis and intended for release only after his passing.
The special is part of Netflix’s “Famous Last Words” series, an intimate documentary format that allows cultural figures to reflect on their lives and legacies in their own words. The interview was conducted privately with executive producer Brad Falchuk, using remote cameras to preserve the conversation’s intimacy. The series previously honored Dr. Jane Goodall in its debut installment.
Dane, 53, was widely recognized for his role as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, which cemented his status as a television star. He later earned acclaim for portraying Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria and led TNT’s The Last Ship for five seasons. His film credits include X-Men: The Last Stand, Valentine’s Day, Burlesque, and Marley & Me.
In the documentary, Dane reflects on his childhood, the loss of his father, his struggles with addiction, and his advocacy work for ALS awareness and research funding. The special concludes with a heartfelt direct-to-camera message addressed to his daughters, emphasizing resilience, friendship, love, and living in the present.
Netflix’s release of Famous Last Words: Eric Dane has drawn significant attention, serving as both a tribute and a lasting testament to the actor’s life and career.
