God of War trilogy remake announced by Santa Monica Studio at State of Play

Santa Monica Studio has announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy during the latest PlayStation State of Play presentation.

The project, titled God of War Trilogy Remake, will revisit the three games that established Kratos as a central figure in PlayStation’s action catalogue.

The original trilogy comprises God of War, God of War II and God of War III, which charted the Spartan warrior’s ascent from mortal soldier to god-slayer.

TC Carson, the original voice actor for Kratos, appeared during the presentation to address fans and confirm that development is under way.

He said the remake has entered early production, meaning further details will take time to emerge. “But I'm telling you, next time we come back, [we're] coming with something big, baby,” Carson said.

The teaser shown at State of Play featured a fiery logo but did not include gameplay footage or a release window. Santa Monica Studio has not provided additional information regarding platforms or specific changes planned for the remake.

The original titles were previously remastered in high definition for later PlayStation hardware. However, this new project is positioned as a full remake rather than a remaster, indicating a more substantial overhaul of visuals and potentially gameplay systems.

The God of War franchise has continued to evolve in recent years, but the trilogy remake marks a return to the series’ earlier Greek mythology setting.

The announcement signals Santa Monica Studio’s intention to revisit the games that helped define the character of Kratos and establish the studio’s reputation.
