Russell T Davies has described his upcoming drama Tip Toe as a direct response to today’s political climate, warning that LGBTQ+ discourse has become increasingly hostile.

Speaking at Series Mania, the acclaimed “Doctor Who” creator said the series reflects growing global tensions and societal divisions. “It’s very much a reaction to where politics is heading,” Davies explained, adding that the show captures the anger and instability shaping modern conversations, particularly around identity and inclusion.

Tip Toe stars Alan Cumming and David Morrissey as feuding neighbors in Manchester. The story follows a gay bar owner and an unemployed construction worker whose lives become intertwined, forcing difficult conversations about homophobia, transphobia, and personal bias. The narrative also explores generational conflict through the relationship between Cumming’s character and Morrissey’s closeted son.

Davies described the series as a “suburban thriller” where everyday communication spirals into chaos. “Every text, every DM, every voice note creates a nightmare,” he said, highlighting how digital interactions can fuel conflict. He also emphasized that the show reflects his personal concerns, noting that as a gay man in 2026, he finds the current climate “dangerous in a way I never thought would happen again.”

Known for groundbreaking series like Queer as Folk, Davies said Tip Toe may spark controversy but remains an important project. The show is expected to deliver a mix of dark humor and sharp social commentary, positioning it as one of the most talked-about upcoming dramas on Channel 4.
