Greg Brown, the founding guitarist of alt-rock band Cake and writer of the band’s iconic hit ‘The Distance’ has died at the age of 56. His former bandmates announced the news over the weekend, describing Brown as integral to Cake’s early sound and development. “Greg was an integral part of CAKE’s early sound and development. His creative contributions were immense, and his presence, both musical and personal, will be deeply missed,” the band said on Facebook.

Brown wrote ‘The Distance’ the breakthrough single from Cake’s 1996 album Fashion Nugget, which became a defining track of the era with its quirky mix of low-fi guitar, funky rhythms, bleepy synths, and Vince di Fiori’s trumpet contributions. Music journalist Dean Kuipers once described the band’s approach as “part self-referential attack on musical certainty and part earnest affirmation of everything rock has ever been.”

After leaving Cake in 1997 prior to their third album, Brown continued to make music with Cake bassist Victor Damiani and keyboardist Dana Gumbiner, forming the band Deathray. They released two albums, one in 2000 and another independently in 2005. Brown also released a solo EP, The End of Something New, in 2023.

Dana Gumbiner remembered Brown as “vicious onstage” yet a deeply loyal and creative friend, writing that he had been “quietly and comprehensively” life-changing to those around him. Former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp added that Brown was his “shyest, most gentle and delicate friend,” recalling how Brown had flown to Los Angeles years ago to reconnect and express his appreciation for their friendship.

Brown’s passing marks the loss of a musician who not only helped shape Cake’s distinctive sound but also left an enduring impact on those who worked and performed with him. Fans and fellow musicians alike have shared condolences, celebrating his talent, creativity, and generosity.
