The 2026 Sundance Film Festival paid a heartfelt tribute to its legendary founder Robert Redford at a gala event filled with stars, filmmakers, and heartfelt remembrances of his enduring impact on independent cinema. The festival — the first since Redford’s passing at age 89 — celebrated his vision, mentorship, and legacy as both a creative force and champion for emerging storytellers.

Attendees shared touching stories that highlighted Redford’s personal investment in nurturing new voices. Director Nia DaCosta recalled how Redford would ride his motorcycle through wooded paths to check in on filmmakers, saying, “I remember once seeing him walk some of the other fellows from the directors lab, and he just looked so full of love and pride for us, for what he built.”

Another memorable moment came from actor Ethan Hawke, a long-time Sundance regular and beneficiary of Redford’s mentorship. Hawke recounted an early audition in front of Redford and shared how the founder’s encouragement shaped his career — ultimately pledging to “keep the fire that he started burning in ourselves” and share that passion with others.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay also delivered a moving tribute, reflecting on Redford’s broader influence: “Mr. Redford didn’t just establish a festival. He modeled a way to be, a way that matters, a way that says artists matter, that imagination is worth protecting.” DuVernay noted that the doors Redford opened remain “still open, and it’s up to us to walk through and to maybe even build our own.”

The tribute included a video segment met with thunderous applause and volunteers wearing buttons reading “Thank you Bob!” His 1969 independent film Downhill Racer is slated for a special screening during the festival, highlighting Redford’s own artistic beginnings and the roots of the institution he inspired.

This year’s Sundance also carries added poignancy as it marks the festival’s final year in Park City, Utah, before relocating to Boulder, Colorado. Redford’s daughter, Amy Redford, reflected on her father’s deep connection to Sundance and his lifelong commitment to supporting artists — even as the event turns a new page in its storied history.
