Thomas Kent “T.K.” Carter, the actor best known for playing Nauls in John Carpenter’s 1982 film The Thing, has died at the age of 69.
Carter was found dead on Friday at his home in Duarte, California, after a 911 call was placed from the residence at 5:42 pm, according to TMZ. No cause of death has been disclosed, and authorities have indicated that no foul play is suspected.
Born on December 18 1956 in New York City and raised in Southern California, Carter began his acting career in the mid-1970s. His early screen work included guest appearances on television series such as Police Woman and Good Times.
He is most widely recognised for his role as Nauls, the roller-skating cook at an Antarctic research station in The Thing, which starred Kurt Russell.
The film centres on a group of men confronted by a shape-shifting alien capable of imitating human form. While initially receiving mixed reactions, the film later developed a strong following.
Carter’s film credits also include Seems Like Old Times, Southern Comfort, Doctor Detroit, Ski Patrol, Space Jam and My Favorite Martian.
On television, he played Michael “Mike” Fulton, an elementary school teacher, on Punky Brewster, alongside Soleil Moon Frye and George Gaynes.
Tributes were shared online following news of his death. Comedian Loni Love wrote on X: “Sad to hear about the passing of my comedy brother TK… He was in the business for over 50 years... I’m glad we shared a good laugh last time we met.. rest well TK.”
Fans also paid tribute, with one writing: “That brother was so funny. As a 90s baby this makes me sad for real.” Another added: “What a cool dude. I met him when I first moved to LA. Very down to earth.”
Carter is survived by his wife, Janet Carter.
