Maya Hawke has spoken about her involvement in the Hunger Games franchise, describing it as “explicitly anti-fascist” while also remaining firmly within the mainstream.

The actor shared her views during an appearance on The Tonight Show, where she discussed her role in the upcoming prequel film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Speaking to host Jimmy Fallon, Hawke explained why joining the franchise was meaningful to her. “First of all, the ‘Hunger Games’ as a franchise I think is so cool, because it’s like so explicitly anti-fascist but so mainstream — which is so unique and special,” she said. “Like, it makes me so proud to be a part of that.”

Hawke also reflected on the legacy of the series and the actors associated with it, particularly Jennifer Lawrence, who starred as Katniss Everdeen in the original films.

“She’s amazing,” Hawke said, adding that Lawrence’s work played “a big part” in inspiring her to pursue acting. She noted that she watched Die My Love while filming Sunrise on the Reaping, describing the experience as “pretty cool”.

While Hawke confirmed that Lawrence will appear in the new film, she did not disclose details about the nature of her return. She did, however, praise director Francis Lawrence, who has directed all but one of the Hunger Games films.

“It’s pretty amazing and special,” Hawke said of his return. “It really is a testament to what a wonderful director Francis is and the environment that he creates.”

Hawke was confirmed in the cast in May and will portray Wiress, the victor of the 49th Hunger Games from District Three. The character was previously played by Amanda Plummer in Catching Fire.

The film also stars Joseph Zada, McKenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning and Billy Porter.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
