Idris Elba knighted, Cynthia Erivo awarded MBE in UK New Year Honours
Formal presentations of these honours are expected to take place later in 2026 by King Charles III or other royals

Actor Idris Elba has been knighted in the United Kingdom’s New Year Honours list, earning the title Sir in recognition of his contributions to film, television, music, and public service.
Alongside him, actress and singer Cynthia Erivo was appointed an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her services to music and drama, marking another milestone in her acclaimed career across stage and screen.
Elba was recognised not only for his extensive body of work in entertainment, including roles in Luther and The Wire, but also for his long-standing commitment to charitable and community initiatives. Through the Elba Hope Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife, he has focused on youth empowerment, education, and efforts to address violence in underserved communities.
Erivo’s honour reflects her impact as a performer and creative force, spanning theatre, film, and music, where she has earned international recognition and critical praise.
The New Year Honours list also celebrates a wide range of figures from the arts, sport, and public life. Ellie Goulding was awarded an MBE for her environmental advocacy, while actors Warwick Davis and Matt Lucas received OBEs for services to drama and charity.
Broadcaster and author Richard Osman was honoured with an OBE for his work in literature and television, and comedian Bill Bailey received an MBE for services to entertainment. Actress and writer Meera Syal was made a Dame for her contributions to literature, drama, and charity.
Sporting figures were also recognised, including Olympic ice-dancing legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, who received a damehood and knighthood respectively for their achievements and voluntary service.
Members of the England women’s football team, including Leah Williamson, Keira Walsh, Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway, and Alex Greenwood, were honoured for their sporting success and cultural impact, alongside head coach Sarina Wiegman, who received an honorary damehood.
While the honours have now been officially announced, the recipients have not yet attended their investiture ceremonies.
These formal presentations, during which medals and titles are conferred by King Charles III or senior members of the Royal Family, are expected to take place later in 2026 at royal residences such as Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.
