Taylor Momsen has sparked a wave of nostalgia and surprise after revealing she managed to squeeze back into her original Cindy Lou Who costume from How The Grinch Stole Christmas a full twenty five years after the film was released. The singer and actor shared behind the scenes footage from a festive photo shoot, showing her trying on the child sized dress she wore as a six year old while starring opposite Jim Carrey in the holiday classic.

Now in her early thirties and fronting rock band The Pretty Reckless, Momsen admitted the costume only just fits, with some creative styling required to make it work for the shoot. The original look featured the instantly recognisable red and green plaid skirt decorated with tiny plates of Christmas cookies, a whimsical detail that fans of the film immediately remembered. For the final images, the outfit was reworked into a strapless version paired with Cindy Lou Who’s signature fur trimmed cape, giving the moment both nostalgia and grown up edge.

Momsen appeared genuinely delighted as she slipped back into the outfit, calling the experience surreal and emotional. The moment also marked a clear shift in her relationship with the role that made her famous. In past interviews, she has spoken openly about being bullied as a child after the film’s release, often reduced to being known only as Grinch girl at school. For years, that association left her feeling conflicted about the movie and its impact on her life.

This holiday season, however, Momsen seems to have fully embraced her Whoville past. Earlier this year, she released a rock inspired version of Where Are You Christmas with her band, reclaiming the song she originally performed on screen as a child. Rewearing the costume feels like another step in that journey, transforming something that once caused discomfort into a moment of empowerment and celebration.

Online reaction has been overwhelmingly warm. Fans flooded social media with praise, calling the shoot iconic and applauding Momsen for revisiting such a beloved role on her own terms. Many commented on how rare it is for original film costumes to survive, let alone still be wearable decades later. Others shared personal memories of growing up with the film, crediting Cindy Lou Who as one of the most memorable characters in holiday cinema.

Momsen’s festive throwback also comes shortly after she reunited with Jim Carrey at a recent music event, further fuelling fan excitement around the enduring legacy of the film.
