James Ransone, known for ‘The Wire’ and ‘It: Chapter Two,’ has died at 46; authorities list cause as suicide

Actor James Ransone, best known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka on HBO’s The Wire, has died at the age of 46. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, the manner of death was ruled suicide by hanging.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call to a residence, conducted an investigation, and reported no foul play.
Ransone began his career in the early 2000s, appearing in small roles on television series including Ed and Third Watch. He gained wider recognition for his performance in the second season of The Wire, appearing in all 12 episodes as Ziggy Sobotka, a dockworker involved in organized crime. The role earned critical acclaim and remains a fan favorite.
In addition to The Wire, Ransone’s credits included appearances on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Hawaii Five-0, Burn Notice, and films such as Tangerine and It: Chapter Two. Most recently, he appeared in The Black Phone and its 2025 sequel, The Black Phone 2.
