Philomena Cunk returns with Cunk on Cinema for BBC and Netflix

Diane Morgan’s Philomena Cunk returns in Cunk on Cinema, a new BBC and Netflix series exploring film history

Philomena Cunk, the satirical British character created by Diane Morgan and Charlie Brooker, is returning for a new series titled Cunk on Cinema, Variety can confirm. 

The three-part mockumentary will air on the BBC in the U.K. and Ireland, with global distribution on Netflix.

The series follows Morgan’s previous projects, including Cunk on Britain, Cunk on Earth, and Cunk on Life, and will explore the history of cinema. Cunk will ask experts about the invention of the camera, film movements such as the French New Wave, the rise of CGI, and the potential impact of artificial intelligence on filmmaking.

Described as Cunk’s “most glamorous series to date,” the programme is produced by Pacesetter Productions for BBC iPlayer and BBC Two. The series is written by Brooker, who also serves as executive producer alongside Morgan and Sam Ward. Al Campbell directs, with Jessica Rhoades as executive producer and Mark Kinsella as co-executive producer for Pacesetter. The BBC commissioning editor is Navi Lamba.

Jon Petrie, BBC director of comedy, said the series continues the success of previous Cunk projects. “Philomena Cunk is back as our leading intrepid documentary filmmaker, exploring cinema with her trademark deadpan humour,” he said.

Cunk on Cinema is currently in production and is expected to air later in 2026. The series will blend comedic commentary with educational insights, offering audiences both laughs and an unconventional perspective on two centuries of film history.
