Michigan fires coach Sherrone Moore over alleged inappropriate relationship with staff member
Michigan removes head coach Sherrone Moore after an investigation found credible evidence

The University of Michigan has dismissed head football coach Sherrone Moore, citing what it described as an “inappropriate” relationship with a staff member, according to a statement released Wednesday, December 10.
Athletic director Warde Manuel confirmed that Moore was “terminated, with cause, effective immediately” following a university investigation that, according to the statement, uncovered “credible evidence” of misconduct that violated institutional policy. Manuel emphasized that Michigan upholds a “zero tolerance” standard for such behavior.
Associate head coach Biff Poggi will assume the interim role. Poggi previously led the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s football program and earlier stepped in for two games this season during Moore’s suspension connected to the sign-stealing probe involving the program.
Moore, 39, had been in his second year as head coach, finishing the 2025 regular season with a 9–3 record. The Wolverines are scheduled to play Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31. His overall record with the program stands at 18–8. No additional details were provided about the nature of the alleged relationship. Moore has been married to his wife, Kelli, since 2015, and they share three daughters.
Moore took over the top job in 2024 after Jim Harbaugh departed for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. Prior to becoming head coach, Moore served on Harbaugh’s staff and earned praise from Manuel, who previously described him as a strong leader and a coach who inspired confidence among players and colleagues.
In his introductory remarks at the time of his hiring, Moore highlighted his commitment to maintaining Michigan’s long-standing football tradition, stressing discipline, physical play, and academic excellence. His appointment marked a historic milestone as the first African American head coach in Michigan football history.
Michigan has not yet announced the timeline for selecting Moore’s permanent successor.
