Brendan Fraser is embracing a new chapter in his career with “Rental Family,” his first leading role since winning the Oscar for The Whale in 2022.

Speaking with the Associated Press, the 56-year-old actor reflected on his professional resurgence, his time filming in Japan, and his long-awaited return to “The Mummy” franchise.

In Rental Family, directed by Hikari and set in Tokyo, Fraser plays a struggling actor who joins an agency that hires performers to play roles in people’s real lives. The film, produced by Searchlight Pictures, offers a gentle, character-driven drama that Fraser says closely aligns with his own evolving outlook—sensitive, curious, and ready for personal reinvention.

Fraser shared that filming in Tokyo was transformative, describing Minato City’s futuristic setting as “living in Blade Runner.” He also enjoyed exploring local cultural quirks, including visits to hedgehog and capybara cafés, which he recalls with amusement. Fraser says the experience helped him step away from Hollywood pressures and reconnect with himself.

Reflecting on his Oscar win, Fraser noted that it changed his trajectory but didn’t guarantee industry prestige. He acknowledged ongoing challenges within Hollywood, including the shelving of completed films like Batgirl, where he had a notable role.

Fraser also opened up about long-standing insecurities, explaining that confidence has always been something he works to build. Despite this, he believes vulnerability has strengthened his connection with audiences.

Looking ahead, Fraser confirmed that a new “Mummy” film is officially moving forward. After nearly two decades of waiting for the right moment, he says he’s ready: “It’s time to give the fans what they want.”
