Macaulay Culkin says he may return as Kevin McCallister, sharing a sequel idea where his son sets the traps

Macaulay Culkin is not ruling out the possibility of reprising his iconic role as Kevin McCallister in a new Home Alone sequel, according to comments he made during a recent stop on his A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin tour. As reported by Variety, the actor said he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to returning, but emphasized that the project would need to feel “just right.”

Culkin also revealed the sequel concept he has in mind. He imagines Kevin as either a widower or divorced father raising a young son while juggling work and family pressures. In his pitch, Kevin accidentally gets locked out of the house during the holidays—only to find that his frustrated son refuses to let him back inside and begins setting traps, flipping the dynamic of the original films. Culkin described the home as a symbolic backdrop for a strained father-son relationship, saying the story would ultimately be about Kevin earning his way “back into his son’s heart.”

The actor’s idea arrives as the franchise continues to spark debate. Variety notes that director Chris Columbus, who helmed the first two films, recently told Entertainment Tonight that reviving the series would be a mistake, arguing the original captured a unique moment that “can’t really be recaptured.” Neither Columbus nor Culkin was involved in Home Alone 3 (1997) or later installments, including the 2021 Disney+ reboot Home Sweet Home Alone, which received largely negative reviews.

The first Home Alone film became a cultural and box-office phenomenon, earning $476 million worldwide and turning Culkin into one of the decade’s most recognizable young stars. While Culkin remains cautious, his comments suggest he’s at least open to revisiting Kevin’s story—if the right idea comes along.
