Sydney Sweeney's 'Christy' biopic struggles at box office with slow $1.3 million start

Sydney Sweeney's new sports biopic Christy had an umimpressive start over the weekend as it opened to a disappointing $1.3 million across 2,011 theaters.

According to Box Office Mojo, the figure earns the movie a place on the ten worst wide releases in history list, despite the film’s scale and Sweeney’s popularity.

Christy chronicles the life of boxer Christy Martin who became the first woman to headline a pay-per-view main event in the 1990s and went on to survive an attempted murder by her husband and trainer.

For all its stirring message and Sweeney’s star power however, the film failed to capture audience, averaging just $649 per theater.

Critically, the film earned a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though reviews weren’t encouraging enough.

The film's release has also been eclipsed by Sweeney's controversies particularly the American Eagle ad campaign that left audiences polarised. the Anyone But You star's response to the ordeal did not help with positive PR either as it wasn't well received by viewers.

Nevertheless, Sweeney is gearing up for her upcoming projects, including Lionsgate’s The Housemaid releasing in December, and the highly-anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada slated for next year.
