Billy Bob Thornton slams celebrities for turning award shows into political speeches
Billy Bob Thornton criticizes Hollywood stars for using award shows to promote political causes instead of gratitude

Actor Billy Bob Thornton is calling out Hollywood celebrities for turning award shows into political platforms.
During a candid conversation on The Joe Rogan Experience, the Landman star expressed frustration with stars who use their acceptance speeches to push social or political agendas rather than acknowledge their achievements.
“I don’t really care about awards anymore,” said Thornton, 70. “I’ve got plenty of them, and I won most when awards were still real.” The Oscar-winning actor said modern award ceremonies often feel more like showcases for virtue signaling than genuine appreciation.
He emphasized that winners should focus on gratitude, not activism. “If you’re truly honored, use your speech to thank the people who gave it to you,” he said. “There’s a time and place for that. Don’t go up there and talk about saving the badgers in Wisconsin.”
Thornton continued, “If you have a billion dollars and want to save the badgers, just save them. That’s barely going to dent your budget.” Joe Rogan agreed, noting that many stars use such moments to appear morally superior rather than make real impact.
Thornton, who won an Academy Award for Sling Blade in 1997, reflected that his success came at the right time in life. “If I’d been nominated at 21, who knows what I’d have done with it,” he said.
The actor currently stars alongside Demi Moore in the Paramount+ series Landman, where he plays oil executive Tommy Norris. His comments add fuel to the ongoing debate about whether politics belong in Hollywood award shows.
