Dua Lipa thrilled fans at her San Francisco concert on October 12 by inviting Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong on stage for a special performance of the band’s 2004 hit, “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
The surprise collaboration took place during Lipa’s Radical Optimism Tour stop at the Chase Center, where she has made it a tradition to perform a surprise cover song by a local artist at each show. This time, she elevated the moment by bringing out a Bay Area music legend.
“Every night we do a different song, a surprise song by a local artist,” Lipa told the audience. “I immediately thought about San Francisco and the incredible music that has come from here. I thought about one band in particular that would be perfect tonight.”
Lipa praised Green Day for their impact and authenticity, adding, “I love this band for so many different reasons — the rawness, the authenticity, the message behind it, and the space it holds for people who feel like they don’t belong.” She then introduced the crowd to “the incredible Billie Joe from Green Day,” prompting a wave of excitement from fans.
As the opening chords of “Wake Me Up When September Ends” played, Armstrong and Lipa traded vocals, turning the pop concert into a brief rock showcase. Originally released in 2004, the song became one of Green Day’s most iconic tracks, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The night before, Lipa covered another local classic — Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” — also at the Chase Center. Throughout the tour, she has featured location-specific tributes, including “Royals” by Lorde in New Zealand and “One Last Time” by Ariana Grande in Miami.
Lipa’s Radical Optimism Tour, which began in November 2024, is scheduled to wrap in December 2025 with a trio of shows in Mexico City. So far, it has included several surprise guest appearances, including Gwen Stefani in Los Angeles.
