Channing Tatum has once again stirred the Marvel fandom after teasing Gambit’s return in Avengers Doomsday. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor hinted that fans are “just not ready for what’s about to happen” in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The clip has since gone viral, fuelling speculation across Reddit and X about the scope of the next Avengers instalment.
Tatum made his long-awaited debut as Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine in 2024, a surprise cameo that delighted audiences after nearly a decade of false starts for the character. He was originally supposed to appear in X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2006, but the mutant card-thrower was cut from the film. The role was later portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Now, it seems Tatum’s version of the fan-favourite mutant will play a much bigger part in Avengers Doomsday. Speaking about the role, Tatum told Fallon that joining the Avengers feels like a dream come true. “I was the kid in Pascagoula throwing cards at friends, pretending to be an X-Man,” he said. “Now to be in the Avengers is beyond my wildest dreams.”
Marvel fans have taken his comments as confirmation that Gambit will return in a more central role. The film’s cast reportedly features an enormous ensemble including Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Florence Pugh as Yelena, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki. The star-studded lineup has only heightened anticipation for what many expect to be Marvel’s biggest crossover yet.
Tatum’s tease also raised curiosity about how Gambit will fit into the multiverse storyline. With characters like Wolverine, Deadpool and Magneto rumoured to appear, the film could finally unite mutants and Avengers under one cinematic timeline.
Avengers Doomsday follows the blockbuster success of Deadpool and Wolverine, which reignited audience excitement for Marvel crossovers. The upcoming film, currently in post-production, is expected to release in 2026. Fans online say Tatum’s cheeky hint might be Marvel’s most obvious tease yet, and they can’t wait to see what chaos Gambit brings next.
