The first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the upcoming Star Wars film, has been released and prompted divided reactions from fans.

The 90-second teaser, showcasing the return of Din Djarin and Grogu, is drawing criticism online for its visual style and perceived lack of cinematic distinction.

Many fans have compared the film’s look to that of the Disney+ series rather than a feature-length production. Comments on YouTube noted that “this just looks like one episode of the show,” while others suggested there was greater excitement for the 20th anniversary re-release of Revenge of the Sith.

Another viewer summarised the reaction: “50% of the comments: Jimmy Kimmel and the Empire, 49.9% of the comments: This Looks Like Season 4, 0.01%: Somehow Razor Crest returned!”

On Reddit, some viewers expressed a more relaxed stance, with one comment reading: “Kinda looks like it’s just supposed to be fun, which I totally dig. Like if it’s just a movie length episode I’m down with that.”

Directed by Jon Favreau, the film marks the continuation of the Star Wars storyline introduced in The Mandalorian. While Favreau has been praised for character-driven storytelling and world-building, some fans questioned whether his directorial style lends itself to visually striking cinema, with comparisons being made to his earlier work on Elf, Zathura, and Cowboys & Aliens.

The debate has highlighted broader concerns among sections of the fandom about Disney’s stewardship of the franchise.

Critics argue that the film’s teaser lacks the distinctive visual identity associated with earlier Star Wars films, while others maintain that judging a full feature by a short teaser may be premature.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will continue the story of the bounty hunter and the child, building on three seasons of the Disney+ series.
