D4vd explains manga-inspired violent alter ego for 'Romantic Homicide' in resurfaced video

An old interview of D4vd has resurfaced in which he addresses the concept behind his notorious "Romantic Homicide" music video, explaining that the violent imagery is based on a fictional alter ego he created.

The interview from March with Mahogany shows the artist outlining how the character "Itami" emerged from a manga idea he was writing, rather than real-life events.

In the video, D4vd describes Itami as an “agent of chaos” and an evil version of himself, inspired by Japanese anime. “A big part of that manga was an evil version of me named Itami, which means pain in Japanese, and he wears a blindfold. He’s basically an agent of chaos and kind of my alter ego,” the singer said. He compared the dual-character dynamic to the split personalities portrayed by Brad Pitt and Edward Norton in Fight Club.

The |Romantic Homicide| video shows Itami holding a bloody knife and confronting a bloodied female character, whom D4vd described as “the ghost of the person that he killed” and the “first victim in the manga.” He explained that bringing this concept to life on screen allowed him to merge creative ideas and visual storytelling.

The resurfaced interview comes amid speculation around the case of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas whose body found in D4vd's Tesla on September 8.

Critics have drawn parallels between the song’s lyrics, its release date coinciding with Rivas’s birthday, and the resemblance between the female character and the missing woman.

Despite the evidence allegedly connecting D4vd to Rivas' case, the singer has not been arrested but is reportedly cooperating with authorities amid cancelled tour dates and dropped brand deals.
