Barbie animated movie in development at Illumination with Universal Pictures release planned

Barbie animated film enters development at Illumination with Mattel Studios, marking first theatrical release

A new Barbie animated film is currently in development at Illumination in partnership with Mattel Studios, marking the first time the franchise will receive a theatrical animated release. The project represents a shift from Barbie’s long-standing history of direct-to-video productions.

The collaboration between Illumination and Mattel Studios was finalised in mid-2025, with Universal Pictures securing global distribution rights. The film is currently in pre-production, with casting and early development work underway. No director or release date has been officially confirmed.

Barbie films have traditionally been released on home video platforms for more than two decades. Titles such as Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper and Barbie: Fairytopia built a consistent audience, but did not receive theatrical releases. The new project signals a change in strategy, positioning the franchise for cinema audiences.

The development follows the success of the 2023 live-action Barbie film starring Margot Robbie. The animated project is being developed separately, forming part of a broader expansion of the brand across different formats and studios.

Illumination, known for producing major animated franchises including Despicable Me and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, brings experience in delivering large-scale theatrical releases aimed at family audiences. The studio’s involvement is expected to shape the film’s approach to storytelling and visual design.

According to a statement from the deal announcement, “Illumination and Mattel Studios have finalised a deal to develop a new Barbie movie that will be the first in animation for theaters.”

While no timeline has been confirmed, industry expectations suggest a potential release window in 2027 or later, allowing time for production and post-production processes. The animated film is expected to operate independently from existing live-action projects.
