Employees of the Peshawar Metropolitan Corporation have not received their salaries for the month of August due to a worsening financial crisis. The Local Council Board rejected a summary submitted by the Capital Metropolitan Government seeking a grant of Rs150 million to clear staff salaries and pensions, leaving workers in distress.
In response, the employees have convened a meeting to organize protests, starting from Wednesday, September 17. According to the United Municipal Workers Union Chairman Malik Muhammad Naveed Awan, General Secretary Syed Waqar Ali Shah, and President Ismail Khan, the corporation generates sufficient revenue through local income and provincial government grants. However, they alleged that mismanagement, unnecessary expenditures, and lack of planning by the administration have plunged the institution into decline.
Union leaders demanded an immediate halt to wasteful spending, fuel provision for non-essential staff vehicles, and payments to "ghost employees." They also called for an end to corruption in local quotations, fictitious maintenance bills, and stationery expenses.
