PESHAWAR:

In a vibrant display of inclusivity and community spirit, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Directorate General of Sports organized the Transgender Sports Festival at the Peshawar Sports Complex on Saturday.

More than 100 transgender individuals and short-statured athletes took part in a day filled with athletic competitions, music, and camaraderie, turning the event into a joyful family-oriented gathering.

The festival featured a diverse lineup of activities, including archery, tug-of-war, musical chairs, 50m and 100m races, futsal, sack races, cricket, and eating contests. Participants danced enthusiastically to live music, infusing the atmosphere with celebration and positivity.

Mahigul, a prominent member of the transgender community, described the event as a "beautiful opportunity for smiles." She highlighted how it brought together individuals from remote areas, allowing them to connect, compete, and showcase their talents on the field.

Arzoo, a leader in the transgender community, emphasized the importance of such initiatives. "Events like these must continue because promoting positive activities is commendable," she said. "Sports play a vital role in fostering healthy lifestyles and drawing the community toward athletic pursuits."

Farzana, President of the Transgender Association Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, noted the everyday challenges faced by transgender individuals. "Usually, we get little time for sports due to late-night functions and fatigue," she explained. "That's why we need at least two such festivals annually, to enjoy tension-free moments with peers in a supportive environment."

Director General of Sports Tashfeen Haider reaffirmed the department's commitment to equality. "Sports competitions are everyone's right," he stated. "We will make these events part of the official calendar to ensure regular sports activities for the transgender community every year." He added that the Peshawar Sports Complex grounds are fully equipped for both national and international competitions.

The chief guest, Secretary of Sports Muhammad Asif Khan, addressed the media during the opening ceremony. He stressed that the goal was to affirm the transgender community's place in society and their fundamental right to participate in such activities. He announced that the Transgender Sports Gala would become an annual fixture to provide equal opportunities in sports. He also noted that sports activities across the province have intensified since the new year, with top facilities being extended to youth.

Other dignitaries present included Director Merged Districts Umar Arshad, Director Operations Jamsheed Baloch, Assistant Director Shah Faisal, and additional officials.

On the first day of competitions, Ajwa claimed first place in the sack race, followed by Nori in second and Nayab Gul in third.

The festival underscores growing efforts to promote diversity and participation in sports, sending a powerful message of respect, unity, and empowerment.
