Beyoncé and Jay-Z were absent from the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, leaving producers and fans questioning whether the power couple would attend television’s biggest night.

Despite both being nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category, the pair did not make an appearance at the ceremony held on September 14, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The nominees included Beyoncé’s Christmas Day NFL halftime show, Beyoncé Bowl, and Jay-Z’s Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar. Producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jennae Rouzan-Clay admitted they realized the couple would not attend only after the show began. “We figured it out when they weren’t in the seats,” Collins told Variety.

Collins, who also worked on the couple’s nominated specials, had reserved seats in case they arrived. “She can make anything happen,” he said of Beyoncé, noting that the team was prepared for their attendance at any moment.

Ultimately, the award went to Lorne Michaels for Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special, SNL50: The Anniversary, which beat out both Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s projects, as well as the 2025 Oscars broadcast. Michaels reflected on his five decades with the show, calling his Emmy win “a full-circle moment.”

Although absent from the ceremony, Beyoncé had reason to celebrate. Last month, she won an Emmy in a juried category for costume design, a milestone that brought her halfway to achieving EGOT status. The singer now holds 11 Emmy nominations.

The 2025 Emmys continued the couple’s trend of skipping major award shows, including the VMAs earlier this year.
