Selena Gomez is speaking candidly about the lasting impact of body shaming and how it has shaped her relationship with her weight and self-image.
In a recent Allure cover story published on September 9, the 33-year-old singer and actress revealed she has faced years of criticism over her body, admitting that comments about her weight continue to affect her.
“I got stung by a person saying I was fat,” Gomez shared, adding that such remarks have fueled insecurities. “I’ve dealt with a lot of weight issues in my life, and that’s something I’m very sensitive to.”
To address these struggles, Gomez turned to dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), a form of talk therapy designed for people who experience emotions intensely. She described the process as “peeling away layers,” helping her connect present emotions with past experiences.
The Only Murders in the Building star, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2014, explained that her medications often cause her weight to fluctuate. In 2023, she told fans on TikTok Live that the treatment leads to water retention, adding, “I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself. My medications are important.”
Beyond her physical health, Gomez has been open about her mental health journey, including her bipolar disorder diagnosis in 2020. She has described gaining knowledge about her condition as empowering, saying it helped take away her fear.
Reflecting on her growth, Gomez said she finally feels less apologetic about her choices: “I’m in a place where I don’t need to be apologetic for every single thing that I do.”
