Grammy-winning musician Billy Strings says bluegrass remains central to his music as he continues to expand the genre with improvisational flair.
The acclaimed singer, songwriter and guitarist, who has become one of the leading figures in modern bluegrass, spoke about his deep connection to the music during an interview with NPR.
Strings, known for his virtuosic guitar playing and energetic live performances, recently released his new album Live at the Legion. The record captures his ability to bridge traditional bluegrass roots with jam-inspired improvisation, a blend that has helped him attract a devoted following beyond the bluegrass community.
“Bluegrass is where my heart is,” Strings said, noting that while his sound often incorporates elements of rock and improvisation, the foundation of his music remains rooted in the traditions he grew up with. His style has drawn comparisons to legends of the past while also carving out a fresh space for younger listeners discovering the genre for the first time.
The new album showcases live recordings that highlight Strings’ technical skill as well as his ability to bring an improvisational edge to familiar bluegrass arrangements. With a career that includes sold-out tours and collaborations with artists across genres, Strings has become one of the most visible ambassadors of bluegrass music today.
Fans can stream Live at the Legion on major platforms, while upcoming tour dates are expected to feature both songs from the album and extended live improvisations.
