Alan Ritchson is set to reunite with director Patrick Hughes for an upcoming untitled Amazon MGM Studios film based on the heroic true story of Navy SEAL Mike Thornton. The announcement comes as Ritchson’s latest film, Motor City, premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival following its world debut in Venice.

The new project is part of Ritchson’s three-picture acting deal with Amazon MGM Studios and will mark his second collaboration with Hughes. The duo previously teamed up on Netflix’s sci-fi adventure War Machine, which recently wrapped production.

The film will chronicle the extraordinary true story of Mike Thornton, a Navy SEAL who, during the final days of the Vietnam War, led a harrowing rescue mission. After five fellow soldiers were trapped behind enemy lines in North Vietnam, Thornton and his team faced overwhelming odds, outnumbered by a force of 150 enemy troops. Amid relentless combat, Thornton carried a wounded lieutenant and another soldier, swimming for hours through enemy-infested waters to reach safety. His bravery earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The film is being produced by a powerhouse team that includes Sylvester Stallone’s Balboa Productions, Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman and Alex Young, Alan Ritchson’s AllyCat Entertainment, and Alan Rautbort. The screenplay was co-written by Mark Semos, Alan Ritchson, and Jason Hall, known for American Sniper and Thank You for Your Service.

Ritchson is currently filming season four of Reacher, continuing his role as star and executive producer. The series has proven to be a massive success for Prime Video, with its third season becoming the platform’s most-watched returning season, drawing 54.6 million global viewers in 19 days.

In addition to Motor City, Ritchson recently completed several other projects, including The Runner, Playdate with Kevin James, and The Man With The Bag starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He will also return in the upcoming Fast & Furious 11 film.
