Google Play Games is rolling out a major update aimed at enhancing user profiles with features reminiscent of Steam’s community tools. The update, set to launch globally on September 23, 2025 (and October 1 in the EU and UK), introduces a more connected and customizable experience across devices.

Originally designed for Android, Google Play Games has expanded to PC, and with that growth comes a push to unify the gaming experience. The new update focuses on creating a “gaming journey” view, where profiles now showcase achievements, gameplay stats, and more personalized information. Players will be able to display their gaming milestones and even tailor how their profile looks—much like Steam’s public-facing gamer profiles.

In addition to cosmetic upgrades, Google is also promising “new ways to build your gaming community,” though details remain vague. However, the addition of follower features and public stat sharing suggests that community and social elements similar to Steam’s could be on the way.

Users will be able to set their profiles to public or private, with current visibility settings carrying over. Those who prefer to keep their activity private should review their settings before the update rolls out. Making a profile public will allow other users to see stats, achievements, and follow each other’s progress.

Google also noted changes in data handling: the platform will collect gameplay data, including what games are installed, what users are playing, and how much time is spent in each title.

These changes could make Google Play Games more attractive to players who enjoy the community and profile features seen on platforms like Steam. While full details will be clearer post-launch, it’s clear Google is making a stronger push into PC-style gaming features.
