Actors Steve Carell and John Krasinski made an unexpected appearance on the first day of filming for The Paper, the new spin-off of The Office. The pair stopped by the set at Universal Studios Lot in Los Angeles to wish the cast good luck, according to Sabrina Impacciatore, who plays managing editor Esmeralda in the upcoming series.
Impacciatore recalled the moment during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. She explained that she and co-stars Domhnall Gleeson and Chelsea Frei were in the makeup trailer preparing for their first scenes when they heard a knock at the door.
“Someone enters the trailer, and it’s Steve Carell and John Krasinski! We’re fainting. Like, what? Can you imagine? Isn’t it crazy? The first day of shooting!” she said.
The visit was possible because Carell and Krasinski were filming a commercial for Italian coffee brand Lavazza next door on the same day. Impacciatore described the coincidence as a “blessing”, linking it to her lifelong connection with Italian coffee.
This was not her first encounter with Carell. Before joining The Paper, Impacciatore watched The Office for the first time and became a fan of his performance. She later flew from Rome to New York to see him in a Broadway production of Uncle Vanya.
After the show, she met him backstage, asking him to “bless” her for her role. “He was so warm. He said, ‘These people are brilliant. You are going to have the best experience of your life. You’re going to be great,’” she recalled.
The Paper, created by Greg Daniels, follows the documentary crew from The Office as they turn their cameras on the staff of The Truth Teller, a struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. The series will premiere on September 4 on Peacock.
