Coldplay frontman Chris Martin used humor to address recent controversy over the band’s “kiss cam” tradition during a fan proposal at Wembley Stadium.

Last month, the kiss cam segment at a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts sparked headlines after Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company’s head of HR, Kristin Cabot, were caught embracing on the big screen. Both executives, who are married to other people, faced immediate backlash and later resigned from their positions. The incident fueled debate about whether kiss cams should remain part of live shows.

On Friday night in London, Martin playfully referenced the controversy while assisting a fan with a marriage proposal. After spotting the man’s “I want to propose” sign, the 48-year-old singer conducted lighthearted “security checks.”

“Is this person your partner? Yes? No one else’s partner?” Martin asked, before joking about whether the couple were related or even “AI.” Once assured, he encouraged the man to get down on one knee. The woman accepted, prompting Martin to congratulate the couple as the crowd erupted in cheers.

“Congratulations, my brother and my sister,” Martin said. “What a beautiful girl. What a wonderful guy. On a day like this, I encourage you to kiss. I hope you’re happy until the day that you die.”

Martin also confirmed that the kiss cam feature will remain a staple of Coldplay concerts despite the Boston controversy. Addressing a fan who had attended multiple shows, he noted, “We’ve been doing [the kiss cam] a long time...life throws you lemons and you’ve got to make lemonade.”
