NBC’s hit mockumentary sitcom The Office returns in a new form with The Paper, a spin-off series that follows the employees of a struggling Midwestern newspaper. The new show premieres on Peacock with four episodes on September 4.
The Paper centers on the Toledo Truth Teller, a newspaper sharing office space with a toilet paper company, as it tries to stay afloat amid budget cuts and an evolving media landscape. The series features Oscar Nuñez reprising his role as Oscar Martinez, a fan-favorite character from The Office, now working alongside a new ensemble cast including Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key.
In the trailer, Gleeson’s character, Ned Sampson, arrives as the new editor-in-chief with ambitious plans to revive the newspaper’s fortunes. He faces the challenge of motivating a diverse group of staffers, many of whom lack traditional journalism experience. When Ned asks the team how many have written for a paper before, answers range from “I wrote a paper in junior high” to “I’ve tweeted,” highlighting their unconventional backgrounds.
Guest appearances in the series include Eric Rahill, Tracy Letts, Molly Ephraim, Mo Welch, Allan Havey, Duane Shepard Sr., Nate Jackson, and Nancy Lenehan.
Co-created by The Office developer Greg Daniels and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), The Paper is executive produced by Daniels, Koman, original Office creator Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas. The series is produced by Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group.
This new mockumentary maintains the comedic and satirical tone fans loved in The Office while exploring the challenges faced by modern journalism through its fresh storyline and characters.
