KARACHI:

The family of a young man allegedly killed in an honour-related incident has received his body from a morgue, as police say they continue to investigate the apparent targeted killing of the victim, Sajid Masih and his young wife Sana Muhammad Asif in Clifton.

Sajid was gunned down alongside Sana near China Port in Clifton Block-2 within the jurisdiction of the Boat Basin police station. Their bodies were recovered on July 28.

According to police, the couple hailed from Gujranwala and had recently contracted a love marriage against the wishes of their families. Police investigators suspect the killings may have been carried out over the union.

Sajid’s body was handed over to his family from the Chhipa morgue in Saddar on Thursday. He was laid to rest at the Mohammad Shah graveyard in North Karachi. However, no one from Sana’s family has yet come forward to claim her body.

Police are treating the incident as a suspected honour killing, though no arrests had been reported till the filing of this report. Investigations are underway.

In an another development, a couple and their minor son, brutally axed to death allegedly over a longstanding family dispute stemming from a love marriage, were laid to rest at a local graveyard in Ghaghar Phatak, Bamboo Goth.

The victims, Abdul Majeed, his wife Sakina, and their three-year-old son Abdul Nabi, were attacked and killed inside their home in the early hours of Wednesday. Police believe the triple homicide was linked to the couple’s court marriage, which had taken place seven to eight years ago despite opposition from Sakina’s family.

According to police, a case has been registered at Steel Town police station on the complaint of Imam Bakhsh, the brother of the deceased Abdul Majeed. The FIR names six suspects, including Sakina’s brother Shehzad alias Raja, their father Gulab Khan, and an accomplice Mir Ali, alias Hasan.

Per the FIR, Shehzad allegedly called Imam Bakhsh at around 2am and said: “I have killed your brother, his wife and child. Come and collect the bodies.”

The complainant told police that although the couple had faced opposition from the girl’s family, reconciliation was believed to have taken place two years ago. The victims had been living in Bamboo Goth for the past eight months, where Majeed worked as a daily-wage labourer.

After the murders, the bodies were initially shifted to Bela, Balochistan, for burial. However, residents there reportedly refused to allow the burial, citing local customs. The bodies were subsequently brought back to Karachi and kept at the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth.

Speaking to The Express Tribune outside the morgue, Abdul Majeed’s elder brother, Nawroz, confirmed receiving a call from the prime suspect confessing to the killings. “They had married out of their free will in court, and we had reconciled long ago. But still, they were mercilessly killed,” he said. Nawroz added that four people were directly involved in the murders and appealed to the government for justice.

The funeral prayers were offered at a local graveyard in Ghaghar Phatak, attended by relatives, neighbours, and mourners. The victims were laid to rest amid an outpouring of grief.
