Netflix has taken an unusually bold step by renewing the adult animated series Long Story Short for a second season before viewers even get a chance to see the first. The show, created by BoJack Horseman mastermind Raphael Bob-Waksberg, is set to premiere its debut season on 22 August 2025, but the streamer has already committed to continuing the story beyond that.

In a cheeky statement, Bob-Waksberg reacted to the early renewal with his signature wit, “Wow!! A season two?! And season one hasn’t even come out yet! It must be a REALLY good show. I can’t wait to watch it when it premieres.” Netflix seems confident that it’s betting on a hit, doubling down before the public’s verdict is in.

The animated series chronicles the Schwooper siblings across multiple decades, jumping through different time periods as they navigate childhood, adulthood and everything in between. The show promises to mix emotional depth with surreal humour, a balance Bob-Waksberg mastered in BoJack Horseman.

Voice talent includes Lisa Edelstein, Paul Reiser, Ben Feldman, Abbi Jacobson, Max Greenfield, Angelique Cabral and Nicole Byer, while Dave Franco and Michaela Dietz will appear in guest roles. With original art by Lisa Hanawalt, who also worked on BoJack, and production by ShadowMachine, the team behind Tuca & Bertie and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the project has strong creative backing.

Netflix’s decision to renew the show so early may be a strategic move to ensure continuity in production for its animation division, but it also fuels curiosity. Will the series live up to the hype when it finally arrives?
