Chip and Joanna Gaines have responded to criticism from some evangelical groups after their new Magnolia Network series, Back to the Frontier, featured a same-sex couple with two sons. The series, which premiered on HBO Max on July 10, follows three couples living as 1800s homesteaders, including Jason and Joe Hanna-Riggs.

According to Realtor.com, Jason Hanna-Riggs said seeing a same-sex couple featured on the show’s promotional materials encouraged him to join, seeing it as an opportunity for representation. “What really inspired me was when I saw the flyer on social media, and I saw a gay couple on the front of that flyer,” he said.

The inclusion led to criticism from figures including Franklin Graham, who posted on X that while Christians should love others, they should also follow biblical teachings on marriage. The American Family Association also criticised the Gaines, stating the show promotes an unbiblical view of marriage and family.

Ed Vitagliano, vice president of the AFA, said the show was disappointing to those who admired the Gaines for their previous views on marriage. He added, “We aren’t sure why the Gaines have reversed course, but we are sure of this: Back to the Frontier promotes an unbiblical view of human sexuality, marriage, and family.”

Chip Gaines addressed the backlash on X, encouraging open discussion rather than judgement. “Talk, ask questions, listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge first, understand later or never,” he posted.

After further comments, Gaines added, “If you admire and appreciate us so much, any chance there’s more to this? But that’s my point.. no one knows. But the ‘Christians’ have certainly come out in full force as if they do know.. ‘judge not….’ ‘Love one another’ it’s not difficult.”
