'The Gilded Age' Season 3: Bertha hosts major wedding as family tensions surface in new episode

The Gilded Age Season 3, Episode 4, titled Marriage Is a Gamble, premiered Sunday. The episode centres on the wedding of Gladys Russell to Hector, Duke of Buckingham, marking a milestone in Bertha Russell’s ongoing efforts to elevate the family’s status in New York society.

The episode shows Bertha overseeing the preparations for the wedding, with limited involvement from Gladys. Despite initial hesitation, Gladys proceeds with the ceremony. Following the wedding, the couple departs on a ship, and Gladys is encouraged to fulfil marital expectations.

Elsewhere, Jack Trotter and Larry Russell sell Jack’s alarm clock patent to Mr. Weston for $600,000. Jack considers his future but chooses to remain with the Van Rhijn household after confiding in Mrs. Bauer.

Peggy Scott continues to face discrimination from Dr. Kirkland’s mother, Elizabeth Kirkland, who openly disapproves of Peggy’s background and profession during a public appearance.

Ada Forte participates in a séance conducted by Madame Dashkova in an attempt to contact her late husband. The session is interrupted by Agnes Van Rhijn, but Ada remains convinced of the medium’s abilities.

Charlotte Astor becomes the subject of public gossip following reports of an affair abroad. Mrs. Astor instructs her daughter to avoid the wedding, but Charlotte resists, questioning her mother's authority.

Episode 4 introduces Madame Dashkova, a new character played by a guest actress, as a spiritual medium engaged by the Van Rhijn household.

New episodes of The Gilded Age air Sundays at 9:00 PM ET on HBO and stream on HBO Max.
