
James Carter Cathcart, the renowned voice actor best known for his work on Pokémon, has passed away at the age of 71. Cathcart died on Tuesday, July 8, after a prolonged battle with throat cancer, according to a family member. He was receiving hospice care in Forest Hills, New York at the time of his death.
Cathcart brought to life several beloved characters in the Pokémon series, including Professor Oak, Meowth, Gary Oak, and James from Team Rocket. His distinct voice also resonated with fans of Sonic X, where he voiced Vector the Crocodile, and in the Shadow the Hedgehog video game.
Diagnosed with throat cancer in 2023, Cathcart faced challenging treatments, including aggressive chemotherapy. After completing his work on the English dub of Pokémon: Ultimate Journeys, he retired from voice acting.
Fellow voice actor Erica Schroeder shared a heartfelt tribute to Cathcart, calling him "one of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and talented souls" and praising his genius in various artistic fields, including music and voice acting.
