KARACHI:

A rickshaw driver was killed while five including a woman and a child sustained injuries in a shooting incident, took place near a restaurant in Surjani Town, late on Sunday night.

According to the police, four armed men, riding two motorcycles, opened indiscriminate fire on a rickshaw killing the rickshaw driver Aleem, 45, on the spot and injuring Tehmina, 50, Subhan, 30, Nauman, 22, Zaryab, 20, and Zainab, 6. They were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Investigating Officer Sub-Inspector Muhammad Ali Shah stated that the shooting appeared to be a targeted attack, as the assailants fired from a distance of approximately 200 metres from the restaurant. He also noted that the restaurant owner had previously received extortion threats via WhatsApp from a South Africa number which was later traced belonging to a former member of a political party.

CCTV footage has been obtained but it is not clear because of the distance between the criminals and the camera. Tehmina, one of the injured, shared with The Express Tribune that they were returning from a wedding in Bilal Colony. On the way, they stopped for cold drinks when the incident took place.
